Machrihanish Golf Club
Machrihanish Golf Club:
Machrihanish is a perfect example of the breathtaking scenery for which Kintyre is famous. Nestled among the dunes, alongside one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country, sits the world renowned Machrihanish Golf Club. Boasting two fine courses, Machrihanish Golf Club should top the list of must visit locations for any golfer.
The Championship Course:
It’s hard to feel anything but complete relaxation when you’re playing with the sound of the waves in your ears and the good, sea air filling your lungs. That being said, the 18 hole Championship links course at Machrihanish is as challenging as it is ruggedly beautiful and many a frustrated sigh has been blown into a glass of single malt back at the 19th hole here.
The course was established in 1876 with 10 holes, later expanding to 12, but really came into it’s own when the club sought the assistance of the legendary Old Tom Morris.
The links course was expanded to 18 holes, with the first hole being moved to the spot where it now lies. That first hole is now regarded by many as one of, if not THE best first hole in the world. Not bad for a wee Kintyre village!
The Pans Course:
If you’re short on time but still want to get in a few holes before retiring to the club, the 9 hole Pans course ideal. The same beautiful scenery and challenging terrain but a shorter play time, which is perfect for keen golfers who arrive late in the day but are determined to play before the light leaves.
